Reading Habits in Turkey
Most Turkish people read books on average only 6 hours a year while they watch 5 hours of TV every day.
   Turkey is behind most African countries in her publics' reading habits.
In Japan 14 percent of the population, in USA 12 percent of the population,in England and France 21 percent of the population read books on a regular basis, while 1 person in 10,000 reads books on a regular basis in Turkey
   In a study done by United Nations titled; "Reading Habits of People Around The World", Turkey came in 86th on the list among countries.
   A Japaneese person reads 25 books a year on the average, a person from Switzerland reads 10 books and a French person reads 7 books on the average, while a Turkish person reads one book in 10 years.
   In Turkey only 70,000 people read books on a regular basis.( The population of Turkey is 70 million).
   A Norwegian person's reading habits are 300 times, an American person's reading habits are 210 times and both English and Japaneese person's reading habits are 87 times more than that of an Turkish person.
   The average reading habits of the population of the world are 3 times more than that of a Turkish person.
   According to a study by United Nations,on the average, a Norwegian spends $137, a German spends $122, a Belgium spends $100 and a South Korean spends $39 to purchase books. This number in Turkey is 45 cents.
   While a person's spending habits on books is $1,3 on average around the world in a year, this number is 45 cents in Turkey.
   In a year, in USA, 72 thousand books are puplished. In Russia 58 thousand , in Japan 42 thousand and in France 27 thousand books are puplished,
   In Turkey however, only 7 thousand books are published a year.On average 4 percent of the population read magazines regularly.
   In one day, in England, the Sun Times Newspaper sells as much as all the newspapers combined in Turkey.

   Even though there are 1412 libraries in Turkey, only 400 are equal to the standards of multinational libraries around the world.
   There are 12 million 221 thousand 192 books in the libraries in Turkey, number of people who are members to libraries are 254 thousand 7, number of books purchased are 13 thousand 862.
   According to a study titled "Reading Habits in Turkey", Turkish people listed books as 235 th on their list of necessity items.
   Only 19 % of Turkish students own 25 books or more.
   The most published Turkish boks are stories of Keloglan, Nasrettin Hoca, books about sexual matters, jokes about the Black Sea region and religion. The most foreign books that are published are; La Fontaine,Ezop,Andersen stories and books on topics of sex.
